The detent escapement uses this concept to greatly increase accuracy. At this stage we are able to weigh the circular against the equidistant pallet. It is used in almost all modern pendulum clocks  except for tower clocks which often use gravity escapements. This 'recoil' disturbs the motion of the pendulum, causing inaccuracy, and reverses the direction of the gear train, causing backlash and introducing high loads into the system, leading to friction and wear.
